Psalms 22:9-10

"It was you who brought me safely through birth, and when I was a baby you kept me safe. I have relied on you since the day I was born, and you have always been my God."

Psalm 102:18

"Let this be written for a future generation, that a people not yet created may praise the Lord."

Reflections back by Terrie Hein written on December 21, 2005

October 29, 1990 I went into surgery at Toronto General Hospital.  On October 31 I woke up in ICU.

For the first time in 15 years I was breathing through my mouth and nose... this was the beginning of the hardest couple years of my life.  I did not expect the catheter, NG tube or to have to breathe out of my mouth and nose 24-7 from get go.  In Sick Kids they gently get you used to it by increasing the time of plugging your treach tube until you can handle it 24-7.

For the next two weeks I struggled to gain my strength back.  I struggled to talk, and I struggled to eat!  I now know why God meant for babies to breastfeed when they are born... For the first time in my life that I could remember I had to figure out how to eat and breathe at the same time.  Not only that but I did not have the epiglottis muscle that most people have to cover over their airway when they swallow.  I tried lying on my back, tilting my head back and throwing cubes of jello down, I could not get this eating thing down.  I was bound and determined to do it.  I wanted the NG tube out so bad.  They took out the NG tube after two weeks and basically gave me 48 hours to be eating enough.  I finally went down to the maternity ward and got a baby bottle to suck on.  (you can't suck and breathe at the same time.  It helped me to coordinate my breathing and swallowing.)

During this time there were plenty of firsts for me.  It was the first time I remembered breathing through my mouth and nose, the first time that I had even talked with a whisper, the first time that I was able to smell, the first time being able to have a bath and put my chin under the water.  My voice took a while to learn how to use.  The first thing I noticed smelling was brussel sprouts... they ended up back out in the hall faster than they entered.  Smelling things also changed the taste of things so I needed to adjust in my mind what things tasted like.  I also smelled a rose my mom brought me until it wilted.  I also remember the smell of chlorine in the tub as I had my head under the water right up to my nose.  I think I had one of the longest baths in history.

In the months that followed this surgery I would wake up often at night struggling to breath or choking because of my own spit.  it was also a time when I got my first nose bleed and lived on milkshakes because I was still struggling to eat.  I basically missed the whole year of school because of the surgery and recovery process.  Even up to 5 years later I would still wake up on occasion and panic that I could not breathe.  Learning to breathe out of my mouth and nose was very hard work.  I could not stand to have things covering my throat because it felt like I would suffocate.

This was one of those times in my life when God and I walked along in silence.  He knew I was trusting Him to get me through and I knew that He would.  This happened a lot in my life.  Just a silent trust between the two of us.  Psalm 23 and 30 helped.

Sex in Marriage

Our approach to sex in marriage need not change over the life of our relationship...

When we are newlyweds we will tri-weekly

When we are in mid-life we wil try-weekly

When we are in old age we will try weakly

How Close Can I Get?

There are many things that seem right to man but in the end lead to death.

woe to those who call good, evil and evil, good.  Isaiah 5:20

We need to be seeing how close to Jesus we can get and still be in the world NOT how close we can get to the world and still be close to Jesus!

Do not conform to this world.  Be transformed by renewing your mind.
Romans 12:2

Renewed Vows!!

Awesome things are happening this summer!

July 10th Brent and I renewed our vows.  It was a perfect day orchestrated by God himself.  Sunny and no mosquito's.  Surrounded by a few friends and our families.  This is a result of healing that has happened in our marriage over the past year!  How good God is at healing hearts & mending relationships when we trust him with them!

July 17th when Loretta and I prayed my airway was fully restored and have not had any problems breathing since!

"If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.  But let him ask in faith, nothing waivering.  For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed.  For let not that man think that he shall recieve anything of the Lord"
James 1:5-7

Don't Waiver!!

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight."  Proverbs 3:5-6

Putting your faith in God!

"my son attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings.  Let them not depart from thine eyes; keep them in the midst of thine heart.  For they are life to those that find them, and health (medicine) to all their flesh." Proverbs 4:20-22

I believe that God impressed on my spirit to stop taking my hormones (that I have taken for several years) in Edmonton while I was there.  My joints, mood, hormones have been level ever since with no problem!

Praise God!

Proverbs 4:20-22

"My son attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings.  Let the not depart from thine eyes; keep them in the midst of thine heart.  For they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh." Proverbs 4:20-22

If we would just give God's promises on healing the same credibility we give the medicines developed my medical science, we would have 100 times the results!

"So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God."  Romans 10:17

When we take the time to continually hear God's word, our faith hooks up and releases God's power and we rise up healed!

These verses have always been in the Bible... God made them jump off the page and simplified them this week for me... Read, listen, consistently be in His word and healing of the whole body will be the result.

"Man doesn't live only on bread.  He also lives on every word that comes from the mouth of God" Mathew 4:4 (Deuteronomy 8:3)

Glimses of the Future

Over the past couple of days my soul has been transforming.  I have found healing from past and have recieved forgiveness and forgiven myself.  My spiritual gifts of mercy, dicernment and intercession have begun to awaken.  I need to water these gifts and get into God's word.  I want my faith to grow.

I also got a glimse of my purpose.  I have known for awhile that I am to be building up believers and encouraging people to depen their faith beyond the superficial.  I believe this will include my own healing, other's healings and spiritual discernment and spiritual freedom.

Jesus healed people whenever they wanted it.  I am trusting that as I am building my faith, working through things in my life that need to be dealt with and moving ahead in faith that my body will be fully restored to perfect health complete with balanced hormones, replenished joints, working vocal cords, fully restored epiglotis muscle and a straight and fully open airway.  I am also trusting for a fully restored marriage and that our debt will be eliminated by God's power.

Matthew 7:22-23

22 Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’ 23 And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’

Matthew 8

Jesus Cleanses a Leper
When He had come down from the mountain, great multitudes followed Him. And behold, a leper came and worshiped Him, saying, “Lord, if You are willing, You can make me clean.”
Then Jesus put out His hand and touched him, saying, “I am willing; be cleansed.” Immediately his leprosy was cleansed.
And Jesus said to him, “See that you tell no one; but go your way, show yourself to the priest, and offer the gift that Moses commanded, as a testimony to them.”

Jesus Heals a Centurion’s Servant

Now when Jesus had entered Capernaum, a centurion came to Him, pleading with Him, saying, “Lord, my servant is lying at home paralyzed, dreadfully tormented.”
And Jesus said to him, “I will come and heal him.”
The centurion answered and said, “Lord, I am not worthy that You should come under my roof. But only speak a word, and my servant will be healed. For I also am a man under authority, having soldiers under me. And I say to this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes; and to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.
10 When Jesus heard it, He marveled, and said to those who followed, “Assuredly, I say to you, I have not found such great faith, not even in Israel! 11 And I say to you that many will come from east and west, and sit down with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the kingdom of heaven. 12 But the sons of the kingdom will be cast out into outer darkness. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.” 13 Then Jesus said to the centurion, “Go your way; and as you have believed, so let it be done for you.” And his servant was healed that same hour.

Peter’s Mother-in-Law Healed

14 Now when Jesus had come into Peter’s house, He saw his wife’s mother lying sick with a fever.15 So He touched her hand, and the fever left her. And she arose and served them.[a]

Many Healed in the Evening

16 When evening had come, they brought to Him many who were demon-possessed. And He cast out the spirits with a word, and healed all who were sick, 17 that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Isaiah the prophet, saying:
He Himself took our infirmities
And bore our sicknesses.”[b]

The Cost of Discipleship

18 And when Jesus saw great multitudes about Him, He gave a command to depart to the other side.19 Then a certain scribe came and said to Him, “Teacher, I will follow You wherever You go.”
20 And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head.”
21 Then another of His disciples said to Him, “Lord, let me first go and bury my father.”
22 But Jesus said to him, “Follow Me, and let the dead bury their own dead.”

Wind and Wave Obey Jesus

23 Now when He got into a boat, His disciples followed Him. 24 And suddenly a great tempest arose on the sea, so that the boat was covered with the waves. But He was asleep. 25 Then His disciples came to Him and awoke Him, saying, “Lord, save us! We are perishing!”
26 But He said to them, “Why are you fearful, O you of little faith?” Then He arose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was a great calm. 27 So the men marveled, saying, “Who can this be, that even the winds and the sea obey Him?”

Two Demon-Possessed Men Healed

28 When He had come to the other side, to the country of the Gergesenes,[c] there met Him two demon-possessed men, coming out of the tombs, exceedingly fierce, so that no one could pass that way. 29 And suddenly they cried out, saying, “What have we to do with You, Jesus, You Son of God? Have You come here to torment us before the time?”
30 Now a good way off from them there was a herd of many swine feeding. 31 So the demons begged Him, saying, “If You cast us out, permit us to go away[d] into the herd of swine.”
32 And He said to them, “Go.” So when they had come out, they went into the herd of swine. And suddenly the whole herd of swine ran violently down the steep place into the sea, and perished in the water.
33 Then those who kept them fled; and they went away into the city and told everything, including what had happened to the demon-possessed men. 34 And behold, the whole city came out to meet Jesus. And when they saw Him, they begged Him to depart from their region.

Matthew 10:1

The Twelve Apostles

10 And when He had called His twelve disciples to Him, He gave them power over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease.

Matthew 11:28-30

28 Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”

Matthew 12:22-28

A House Divided Cannot Stand

22 Then one was brought to Him who was demon-possessed, blind and mute; and He healed him, so that the blind and[a] mute man both spoke and saw. 23 And all the multitudes were amazed and said, “Could this be the Son of David?”
24 Now when the Pharisees heard it they said, “This fellow does not cast out demons except by Beelzebub,[b] the ruler of the demons.”
25 But Jesus knew their thoughts, and said to them: “Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation, and every city or house divided against itself will not stand. 26 If Satan casts out Satan, he is divided against himself. How then will his kingdom stand? 27 And if I cast out demons by Beelzebub, by whom do your sons cast them out? Therefore they shall be your judges. 28 But if I cast out demons by the Spirit of God, surely the kingdom of God has come upon you.

Matthew 12:36-37

36 But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment. 37 For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”

Matthew 12:43-45

An Unclean Spirit Returns

43 “When an unclean spirit goes out of a man, he goes through dry places, seeking rest, and finds none. 44 Then he says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’ And when he comes, he finds itempty, swept, and put in order. 45 Then he goes and takes with him seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter and dwell there; and the last state of that man is worse than the first. So shall it also be with this wicked generation.”

Matthew 13:37-43

37 He answered and said to them: “He who sows the good seed is the Son of Man. 38 The field is the world, the good seeds are the sons of the kingdom, but the tares are the sons of the wicked one.39 The enemy who sowed them is the devil, the harvest is the end of the age, and the reapers are the angels. 40 Therefore as the tares are gathered and burned in the fire, so it will be at the end of this age. 41 The Son of Man will send out His angels, and they will gather out of His kingdom all things that offend, and those who practice lawlessness, 42 and will cast them into the furnace of fire. There will be wailing and gnashing of teeth. 43 Then the righteous will shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. He who has ears to hear, let him hear!

Matthew 17:18-20

18 And Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of him; and the child was cured from that very hour.
19 Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, “Why could we not cast it out?”
20 So Jesus said to them, “Because of your unbelief;[a] for assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you.

Identity

...I never realized how en-wrapped my identity was in my illness.  If I am to accept healing from God I need to first accept a new identity that is not attached to my illness. I need to be ready to walk in full health and be a full servant of God with no excuse...

Shaken Faith

... My faith has been shook to the core this week.  Wednesday was my follow up appointment after my laryngitis bout.  My airway was still narrowed.  I am tired.  So many things are going on.  I do believe that this is a battle of the spiritual realm and not of flesh and blood.  I feel like there is more than one spirit that we are dealing with at the present time.  I know that if I told most what I suspect many would consider me crazy.  This battle however is very real.  Today in church each time I drew closer to God my throat felt tighter and I needed to gasp for air a couple of times.  The time I felt it the strongest was when Pastor Koop prayed with the children...
... Brent and Pastor Koop layed hands on me after church.  This afternoon my airway seems to be quite clear...

Reflections

Monday May 30, 2005 started with a little too much dejavu.  I woke up in a panic and having trouble breathing.  This reminded me so much of August 1992.  There were somethings that were different however because I was in Edmonton, Alberta and staying at Kendra and Graham's.  They were also scheduled to work that day and so I wasn't even sure anyone was home at all.

I went downstairs to get a drink to try and clear my throat.  It didn't work.  My breathing was still labored.  Next I went back upstairs trying to remain as calm as possible, I knocked on my sister's bedroom door.  She responded by saying she had another 1/2 hour to sleep.  At that, I broke down and started to loose it.  I told her I was having trouble breathing and my airway was swelling shut.  Needless to say she woke up with a million thoughts running through her mind.  THis is the point where things become a blur, but I will try to write them down as accurately as possible.  (possibly not in the right order though).  This is due to my heart racing and adrenaline pumping!

Before we left for the hospital we had some phone calls to make.  We called Brent (to get some people to begin to praying) and we called mom for some basic information.  While Kendra had a shower I called Tamara to let her know what was going on.  I also called Marily and Felipe because I was suposed to spend my day with them and that is where Nicole was staying.  I calmed down a bit to try to slow my heart rate and adrenaline flow and I looked for my health card (which I forgot at home).  Then while I had a quick bath so I didn't smell Kendra got ready.  We then had to get ahold of Graham, the healthline (to figure out which hospital to go to) and then Saskatchewan Health Services to get my health card number.  Kendra also called work to inform them of the situation and they allowed her to book a vacation day.

We arrived at the hospital at the University of Alberta just after 8:30am.  I was assessed, registered and placed in triage very quickly.  The room we entered looked like many operating rooms I have been in.  I guess they wanted to be prepared.  I was also in constant care so this menat I had a nurse within a few feet all the time.  All the nurses were very good.

I was assessed originally by Dr.  Long.  Pretty much right away  he had ENT residents and respitory therapists ready to scope me.  They probably thought that I would just let them do anything... WRONG!!  I made them slow down their eagerness by repeating several times the sensitivity of my airway and then I made them get ahold of Dr. Wright before they did anything else.  I could tell this dampened their spirits a bit and put 4-7 people "on hold".  Whild I waited Kendra was great.  She reminded me that I could say no to anything I was not comfortable with.  This was very reassuring to hear.  I knew that already but I needed to be reminded.  Thank you Kendra for taking time off and not putting me in a taxi!

After a little while they returned with the info from Dr. Wright.  I think they were probably surprised at all that Dr. Wright was able to tell them about my case, history and airway verbatum.

Dr. Jason (who Kendra thought was noteworthy and cute with a good beside manor to boot) then scoped me to see my larynx.  They wanted to go through my nose so I would not bite down on the expensive equiptment but after a little persuadsion and me promising not to bite down on the scope they did it though my mouth.  They found the beginnings of laryngitis.  It had been caught earlier than in 1992 though.  Because my airway is already smaller than average, any swelling is noticable and can block my airway relatively quickly.

They decided to treat with andtibiotics and prednisone for swelling.  They gave me my first dose of prednisone and we had to wait for pharmacy to send the antibiotic, which took forever and then they sent pills instead of liquid.

We were required to hang out for an hour after the last meds were given for observation.  Then I was reassessed and released.

By the time that we stopped by the pharmacy and got home it was already 4pm.

I bet that is one vacation day Kendra and I will not soon forget.

That night was restless and I still could not breath the best laying down but my airway was not as constricted anymore and I have an easy answer for the next 2 weeks when people ask if I have laryngitis.

I am still amazed at the peace and confidence that God provides through such situations.  He is awesome.  I am also amazed at how he made our bodies so complex including such defenses as adrenaline!  I am so thankful that he provided a way for Kendra to be there for me when I needed her.

By noon on Tuesday my breathing was pretty much back to normal again.  The only reminder of this little adventure was the tower of drugs that I needed to finish!

Reflections by Terrie Hein

Back in 1985 I had my last unsuccessful major surgery at Toronto Sick Children's Hospital.  This operation failed as my body actually opened up and "spit out" the tissue that was used to reconstruct my airway and my airway basically closed in right away again.

My parents and Dr. Fearon were at their whit's end.  All of them just wanted me to be able to live without a treach.  They decided that it would be a good idea to try dilatation's in Saskatoon under the care of Dr. Wright.  I do not remember being consulted about this decision but it did have a great impact on the way my life went after that point.  It was the beginning of one of the hardest times in my life.

For the first year I was put under anesthetic for a short period of time in Saskatoon City Hospital.  This was fine.  I got to know the nurses and orderlies and got them all trained into my routine quickly.  I enjoyed the high that occurred which gave me energy to only go on 2 hours of sleep a night.  I remember getting so much done during those nights.  My creative juices just flowed so freely.

After the first year my parents and Dr. Wright decided to do the dilatation's without the anesthetic.  This, in my opinion, was the worst decision ever made... but hind sight is 20/20 and I believe my parents were only doing what they believed was best for me at the time.  They were told that there would be an extreme possibility that I was becoming addicted to the anesthetic and/or the fact that I was only getting a couple of hours a sleep a night and the fact that the drugs would keep me on a high for a continuing longer period of time each time I went under and after lengthy discussions with Dr. Fearon and Dr. Wright and the fact that the treatment would only be a minute or less in length they decided to give their consent.  As the treatments progressed I became angrier at my parents and at the doctors.  I wanted the treatments just to stop.  I saw no point to them.  They did not make any sense to me.  I was just very frustrated with the lack of power I possessed to stop anything at that point in my life.

Dr. Wright recommended that we begin to see a psychologist at the University.  This did no good.  I believe that I was perfectly justified to feel angry and talking about it only made it worse... nobody understood... especially not someone who had never been through it.  Over the years we also went to the McNeil clinic.  This also was a waste of time.  I believe the only way that counseling would have helped at all was to go through Christian counselling.  Jesus was the only place I found comfort or help during these days.  I couldn't understand people who were Christians and did things that were directly displeasing to God.  Jesus is the great healer and the only true healing comes from Him.

To be sure, I ask many questions with regard to any treatments in my life and the lives of my children now and I am sure to avoid any un-neccesary treatments that could cause more long term pain and resentment than the result of the proposed treatment or test.  I have learned just by asking questions, that much of what people allow doctors to do without questioning is not even necessary.  It is just routine.  This has helped me so much in my work as a doula.  I have learned much about hospital procedure and routine and how to get around certain "routine" procedure's that really do not affect the health of my client or the baby.  I am also able to do this while keeping and gaining the respect of nurses and doctors that I have worked with.  My mom also learned to ask more questions after all of this.

June 1987 was the month I turned 13 years old.  It was the end of one of the hardest times in my life.  My mom and I had flown to Toronto for another "routine" check up in Toronto Sick Children's Hospital.  It was also the last time that Dr. Fearon would be my surgeon there.  He retired before I returned to Toronto in the summer of 1990.

On June 9th, 1987 I went in to be scoped.  This was when I would be put under anesthetic and the doctors would get a good look at what was happening with my airway.  I was absolutely fine with this procedure.  It was like a family reunion every time I returned to Sick Kids.  I had the nurses trained to allow me to walk down to the operating room and sit up until I would fall asleep.  I also had them trained to not put in the IV until I was sleeping.  I found it quite peaceful to wake up in the recovery room knowing that all had gone well.  A little bit of a sore throat but nothing that Popsicles couldn't take care of.

One June 10th, 1987 I turned 13 years old and woke up with an INDEPENDENCE BADGE on my pillow.  This meant that I could go down to the 4th floor all by myself.  This is where the big play room and teen lounge were located.  The nurses threw a small party for me with a cake and a few presents.  I also got a day pass and went out for supper with my mom and Jenny Joynes (who had known me since I was first admitted at 15 months old).  It was a good birthday.

On June 11th, 1987 my mom and Dr. Fearon discussed where to go next with my treatments and options.  They came to the conclusion that there was nothing that could be done until I was older and that I really needed a break from the treatments and experimental surgeries.  This was definitely welcome after the treatments that I had undergone for the past couple of years.  This was a huge answer to prayer but not the end of my anger or confusion.

In the summer of 1990 it was time to go back to Toronto Sick Children's Hospital.  Little did I know that it would be my last time being admitted to that hospital.

When Dr. Fearon had retired all of his cases were handed over automatically to Dr. Johnas.  By the grace of God my case was the only one put on the table for discussion of who would handle it.  As a result Dr. Crysdale took on my case.  After the routine scope in July 1990 the recommendation was made for a referral to Dr. Patrick Gullane at Toronto General Hospital.  This was a highly controversial move for two reasons.  First of all there was a doctor at Sick Kids that wanted to take a crack at my case.  Second it was very rare for anyone under the age of 18 to be admitted into Toronto General Hospital.

Despite the controversy Dr. Crysdale still went ahead with the referral.  He called over to Toronto General and Dr.  Gullane said that he would see me only if I had a CT scan first.  The waiting list was really long.  We got word that there was a cancellation and I could have a CT scan in 20 minutes.  I was still in my PJ's.  We had never moved so cast before or since I am sure!  Within a couple of hours we were talking with Dr.  Gullane and two options were presented.

We returned to Saskatoon a few days later to contemplate what we would decide to do .  For the first time in many years there seemed to be realistic hope presented to us.  The way everything came to this point was definitely a God thing!

The following is a letter that my mom wrote to Dr. Crysdale in July 1990 to update him on what had happened up to that point in my life... medically speaking.

July 20, 1990

Dear Dr.  Crysdale:

The following is a recollection of the events of Terrie's medical procedures.  The chronological order may not be correct, but the spelling my be even worse.

Approximately 6 to 8 hours after Terrie was born on June 10, 1974, (7lbs, 7oz) her one lung collapsed, resulting in a catheter too large for her trachea to be inserted.  This is my memory not the medical records, gleaned from explanations given me by the nurses as to why her breathing was raspy.  The pediatrician in charge left the impression that she almost died and they worked on her for "quite a while".  It is my belief that she was born with a strider or narrower trachea than normal which the medical staff was unaware of.

By age one year she was unable to crawl around and play without beads of perspiration forming on her forehead.  Her raspy breathing became a loud "noise like a donkey" when she became excited.  After I pushed to have another opinion she was referred to Dr. Wright, who immediately admitted her for in drawing of the chest and shortness of breath.

She was thought to have cancer in the neck region or some sort of blockage, but during this surgery this was proved wrong.  She was misdiagnosed by the attending surgeon who I believe took a biopsy of several treachea rings to see what the tissue was that was blocking her breathing.  (I believe this act destroyed her trachea because tracheal rings do not regenerate themselves).  Dr. Wright returned from convention and being noticeably upset as to the proceedure that had been taken in the operating room, arranged for Terrie to be taken to HSC in Toronto under Dr. Fearon.

On October 10, 1975 Terrie was trached by a stab trachea procedure in that they were unable to intubate her with even the smallest catheter.  Everytime Dr. Fearon talked to me from that time, he would remark about the miracle that Terrie was alive and had made it this far.  (From here it might be beneficial to call Dr. Fearon or I understand he still comes in to a clinick here at HSC.)

Many surgical procedures were tried to first creat a passageway for her to breathe followed by using ths to create an airway.

The Fearon-Cotton procedure was tried.

A series of stents were used to try to get the scar tissue to work for us.  Some were anchored in with the tracheotomy tubes (a nightmare to maintain), these stents were the same size as her trachea tube (I have at least one of them at home).  For a period she had a narrower tube (perhaps 2mm in diameter) running through her nose and out through her trachea opening.  These were interfering with her swallowing food.

Another procedure that was tried in her preschool years was to take a cartilage from her rib to try to reconstruct.

When she was 11 years dura or durale tissue (brain tissue from a donor) was used as an attempt to create an airway but her body didn't like it and opened the sutures and "spit it out".

She was dialated on a weekly (or every 10 days) basis after that for a two year period.  This was done in Saskatoon.  For the first year she was put under a general anesthetic for 10 minutes.  She reacted to the drugs and eventually remained "high" almost all week.  It was then requested that these be continued without anessthetic.  At times it would take 5 of us to hold her and she had had enough of "trying".  At 13 years when we realized all of the stress of the past two years had been in vain, I also was in no frame of mind to try either.

The past year has been a rollercoaster of emotions.  In addition to growing up, she has had to cope with the fact that she really does have a handicap and it really does influence what she is, does and who she associates with.  She has had severe depression bouts, to anter at the medical personal for doing this to her, to a new wish to have it 'fixed'.

I know Dr. Fearon was very frusterated with Terrie's medical problem and had probably tried everything within his scope.

I believe presently she has no tracheal rings in the area that is directly below her larnyx.  I also believe that she can push air through that blockage but every breath is like blowing up a balloon where the opening has been chewed shut.  I am also inclined to believe that her larynx may be damaged, paralyzed or whatever.

Terrie is a "good" treachea child.  She has never had blue spells.  She maintains her own trach since Grade 1 and does not follow any of the rules of tracheotomy sterilization taught to her!

p.s.  one of the largest maintenance problems with her tracheotomy is the food drainage around the trachea (not being aspirated either).  This accompanied with very few nerve endings left in this area becomes a major problem.

My Life Journey...

My life journey has been filled with so much!  Many joys, blessings, experiences and struggles.  As I am putting this album together it is my deepest desire that all who read it will be encouraged and enriched by whta they read and see on these pages.  God has a purpose for my life.  As I search through the many life changing experiences in my lifethat have changed me and made me who I am and will be years from now.  This album is a work in progress.  I plan to highlight life changing events here.  This album will only be complete when my work on earth is finished and my work in Heaven begins.  I am looking forward to where God will lead me from here and can't wait to see how He will continue to use my past to enrich and help others that surround me.

I can tell as I typed this out that it was written on the fly without a rough draft... typical of my journalling :-)

Acreage Challenges!

Last Saturday our sewer quit.  Brent could not fix it.  The person who installed our system was away until late Sunday night.  We went to marriage ministries anyway.  Monday came and Brent went to do dishes and the water had quit on him.  There was still water in the well.  Then Brent went to get water but his truck, which had been plugged in all night, would not start!  Brent was ready to pack up and move home to Saskatoon.  We both knew we had to pray, but Brent didn't feel ready to pray together.  I decided to phone some prayer partners.  Ross & Joy, John & Sarah, Uncle Rick & Aunt Caron, Jake & Loretta, Robert & Ruthann.  Within 1 hour of calling for prayer the sewer was working, Brent's truck was started and the water was running without even needing to be primed and Brent was calm!!  These things were definately an answer to prayer!

Thank-you God!
